Calexico Workers' Comp Lawyer

A Calexico worker looking for a workers' compensation lawyer can still use California law even when a job sends them briefly across the border into Mexicali. Labor Code section 3600.5 keeps California benefits in place for an employee hired or regularly working in this state who is hurt outside the state while doing the job. The California Division of Workers' Compensation sends Calexico claims to its office in San Diego, though that result does not decide venue for a specific case. Yazdchi Law is based in Palmdale, has no office in Calexico, and reviews each matter on its own facts before deciding whether representation is a fit.

Calexico sits on the California side of the border with Mexicali. California's own employer records list a distribution business and a Walmart Supercenter operating in the city. Many Calexico jobs connect in some way to the border crossing nearby. A worker hurt on one of those jobs, or hurt while a job briefly sends them across the border, can still have a valid California workers' compensation claim. This guide explains how that cross-border coverage rule works, which state office handles a Calexico claim, and what to do first.

Yazdchi Law is based in Palmdale and has no office in Calexico. Call (661) 273-1780 or use the contact form to ask whether the firm can look at a California work injury claim. Each matter gets its own review before the firm decides whether representation is a fit.

Does California workers' comp cover a Calexico job that crosses the border?

Often yes. California law can keep you covered even when your job sends you briefly into Mexico, as long as a California employer hired you or you regularly work in California.

California Labor Code section 3600.5 sets this rule. It applies when a worker hired in California, or regularly working here, gets hurt while doing job duties outside the state. Here is the rule in its own words.

If an employee who has been hired or is regularly working in the state receives personal injury by accident arising out of and in the course of employment outside of this state, he or she, or his or her dependents, in the case of his or her death, shall be entitled to compensation according to the law of this state.

Picture a Calexico distribution worker sent to make a pickup in Mexicali. Or a retail employee asked to run a cross-border errand for a manager. If that worker gets hurt during the errand, this rule generally keeps the claim under California law. It works differently from a daily commute. Simply living in Mexicali and commuting to a Calexico job does not trigger this section on its own. What matters is where the job hired you and where you regularly work, not which side of the border an injury happened on during a specific work task.

If a claim like this gets turned down, the claim denial guide covers the next steps. A denied request for medical care is a separate issue. See the treatment denial guide for that path.

Does immigration status affect a workers' comp claim in Calexico?

No. California workers' compensation protections do not depend on immigration status.

California Labor Code section 1171.5 says state law protections, rights, and remedies apply to a worker regardless of immigration status. The law lists one narrow exception for a reinstatement remedy barred by federal law. That rule is not unique to Calexico. It matters here because of the city's location on the border. Our separate guide on Labor Code section 3351 and workers' comp for every worker explains how this plays out in a claim, including the broader definition of an employee under California law.

A worker who is afraid that asking for medical care will raise an immigration question should know this: a claims administrator is not an immigration enforcement agency. If an employer threatens or punishes a worker over a claim, that raises a separate retaliation issue under the law. It is not a reason to skip medical care after a job injury.

What should a Calexico worker save after a distribution, retail, or warehouse injury?

Save the basics in one place: your employer's name, your job tasks, and a plain description of how the injury happened.

  • Your employer's exact legal name and the manager or supervisor you reported the injury to
  • Your job duties, including whether the job ever sends you across the border for deliveries or pickups
  • The date, time, and location of the injury, including which side of the border if that matters
  • Any witness names and a copy of the DWC 1 claim form you gave your employer
  • Medical records and work status notes from every visit tied to the injury

The California workers' compensation consultation checklist has the fuller document list. If your work is mainly agricultural rather than distribution or retail, the Imperial Valley agricultural worker injury guide covers that side of the Imperial Valley economy.

Which DWC office handles a workers' comp claim from Calexico?

The state's ZIP code locator sends Calexico to the San Diego district office. That result does not decide venue for your case.

We entered Calexico's main ZIP code, 92231, into the DWC ZIP code locator on October 14, 2026. It pointed to the San Diego office. A small edge of the city also falls in ZIP 92249. Census Bureau boundary data confirms that edge, and that ZIP points to the same office too. The locator is fast, but it does not rule on where a specific case belongs. That can depend on where you were hired, hurt, or now live.

California's Employment Development Department major employer list for Imperial County names a distribution company, Jjall LLC, and a Walmart Supercenter as Calexico businesses. That list runs alphabetically. It is not a ranking by size. Treat it as a sample of local business types, not a top employer list. For more on the San Diego office itself, including hearing types and parking, see the San Diego WCAB district office guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the DWC ZIP code locator decide where my Calexico case is heard?

No. The locator only identifies the district office tied to a ZIP code today. It does not rule on venue for a specific injury claim, which can depend on where you were hired, hurt, or now live. Confirm current office details through DWC before relying on a phone number or address.

Does Yazdchi Law have an office in Calexico?

No. Yazdchi Law is based in Palmdale. Call (661) 273-1780 or use the contact form to ask whether the firm can review a California workers' compensation matter. The firm considers representation after it looks at the facts.

I live in Mexicali but my job is in Calexico. Does that change my workers' comp rights?

Generally no. What matters for coverage is where the job hired you and where you regularly work, not which side of the border you live on. A Calexico employer that carries workers' compensation insurance owes the same benefits to an injured worker no matter where that worker lives.

My Calexico job sent me into Mexicali for a delivery and I got hurt there. Am I covered?

Likely yes, under Labor Code section 3600.5, which keeps California benefits in place for a worker hired or regularly working in California who gets hurt outside the state while doing the job. Save the delivery assignment, the time and place of the injury, and any witness names, then ask about a review.

Will asking about a claim expose my immigration status?

A workers' compensation claims administrator is not an immigration enforcement agency. Labor Code section 1171.5 extends state law protections regardless of immigration status. See our guide on Labor Code section 3351 for a fuller explanation. If an employer threatens you over your status because you asked for care, that raises a separate retaliation issue.

What if the insurance company denies my Calexico claim?

Read the denial letter for its stated reason and deadline. The claim denial guide walks through the usual next steps. If the denial is about one treatment instead of the whole claim, see the treatment denial guide.

Where can I get free job search help in Calexico while my claim is pending?

The Imperial County Workforce Development Board runs an America's Job Center of California location in Calexico at 301 Heber Avenue, phone (442) 265-6192. This center does not handle workers' compensation claims. Use the DWC Information and Assistance Unit or a lawyer for claim and benefit questions instead.
